Concerning report on Connor Bedard contract talks: Rift may be forming with Blackhawks

The Connor Bedard contract story should have been easy. Instead, it is starting to feel like the first real stress test of the Blackhawks' rebuild.
Frank Seravalli pushed back on the idea that Chicago and Bedard are already a couple million dollars apart, saying that to his knowledge, the Blackhawks and Bedard's camp have not even begun negotiating yet. That may sound less dramatic, but it might actually be worse.
Bedard is not just another young star waiting for paperwork. He completed his entry-level deal, can become a restricted free agent on July 1, led Chicago with 75 points, and remains the obvious centerpiece of everything the Blackhawks are trying to build.
Chicago cannot let this get weird
This is the kind of situation that only becomes complicated if the organization allows it to.
The Blackhawks have already publicly framed Bedard as the face of the future. Earlier this spring, the expectation was that negotiations would begin in May, with projections climbing into the $13.5 million to $15 million range after his improved season. The Fourth Period later reported talks had resumed, with big-money structures being discussed.
Now the messaging is messy.
2023 2nd and 3rd overall picks Leo Carlsson and Adam Fantilli are also due for new contracts. Superstar Macklin Celebrini is also eligible to sign his extension as of July 1st.
These can be market-setting contracts, and it only takes one big-money deal to cause a domino effect.
Maybe there is no true rift yet. Maybe this is just agent pressure, media noise, and normal star-player leverage. But with a player this important, perception matters. Every day without clarity invites more questions about term, money, trust, and whether Bedard believes Chicago is building fast enough around him.
The Blackhawks cannot nickel-and-dime their franchise player, and Bedard's camp cannot act like this rebuild exists without him.
This deal has to get done before a negotiation turns into a relationship problem.
