Hurricanes Sign Former NHL Award Nominee to New Tryout Contract
Oliver Kylington has flashed major potential at the NHL level, and now the talented defenseman has found a new home with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The NHL off-season has almost come and gone, and with training camp approaching, there's plenty of talent out there that can still help on an NHL roster this upcoming year.
One of those names is defenseman Oliver Kylington, who once showed he could be an everyday NHLer with the Calgary Flames, and now, after a down season, he's been given a lifeline with Carolina on a professional tryout.
Kylington Joins Carolina After Split Season with Avalanche and Ducks
One season after splitting time between Colorado and Anaheim, the former Flames second-round pick has officially inked a PTO with the Hurricanes, and given the spots potentially available on their blue line, this may give him an opportunity for game time on a contending team.
The 28-year old has now played in 220 games in his NHL career, and while he's lacked consistency, he's got the offensive flair that could make him a very attractive piece for a contender on the third pairing.
Veteran Blue liner Looks to Earn Roster Spot in Preseason
Back in 2021/22 with the Flames, Kylington had a career year of 9 goals and 31 points in 73 games played, but after an absence from the NHL, he looked to earn his way back onto a roster.
After fumbling in free agency, he struggled to do that in 2024/25, but with fresh legs, offensive upside and speed to burn on the blue line, he still has the potential to be a very good NHLer.
Whether that's with the Hurricanes or not, only time will tell, but on a PTO, this is a no-brainer move from Carolina as they look to finally get over the hill and push for a Stanley Cup in a competitive Eastern Conference.
