Now-ex Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar admits that he got very emotional after he was dealt last week at the trade deadline to the Utah Mammoth.
There were many deals last week leading up to the trade deadline, and multiple players have since changed professional addresses.
One of them is now-ex Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar, who was dealt to the Utah Mammoth for Olli Maatta, forward prospect Jonathan Castagna and three second-round picks in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft.
Weegar admitted that he got emotional when talking to Jonathan Huberdeau, with whom he was traded in 2022 from the Florida Panthers to the Flames, about his trade to the Mammoth.
I called Hubie before I told everybody else. I just wanted to give him the respect, because he's my best friend, and we've been through a lot together. When I called him, that's when it truly hit me. I cried. I cried a lot. - MacKenzie Weegar
The Flames are going to miss the playoffs, and Weegar will better be utilized in Utah with the Mammoth, who are a young team on the rise.
He's in the third year of his contract with an AAV (average annual value) of $6,250,000.
MacKenzie Weegar Said He Would Fit In Well With The Mammoth
Upon hearing the news that he was dealt to the Mammoth, who are in just their second year of playing in Salt Lake City after relocating from their previous identity as the Arizona Coyotes, Weegar said he feels he'll fit in well with his new team.
I think there's lots to look forward to with this roster. They're a highly skilled team. They transition quick. They have a great back end - guys who can skate.
It kind of fits my game; if I can just provide a little bit of structure and a little big of grit back there, then that's great. They kind of have it all; they should be proud of where they're at. I'm super, super excited. I feel like I can help out this team. - MacKenzie Weegar

So far this year with the Flames and Mammoth combined, Weegar has 22 points (3G, 19A) in 64 games.
