Longtime Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson was stunningly traded last week to the Anaheim Ducks at the trade deadline, and Ducks GM Pat Verbeek said it was Washington who brought his name up first in discussions.
Last week, the Washington Capitals stunned their fans when they traded longtime defenseman John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks.
It ended the tenure of Carlson with the Capitals, where he was thought of as perhaps the best defenseman in team history who helped them win a Stanley Cup in 2018 over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Now, Ducks GM Pat Verbeek is contradicting some initial comments from Capitals GM Chris Patrick, saying that it was them who brought Carlson's name up first in trade discussions.
I never mentioned [Carlson's availability] just because, you know, he'd been with that organization for a long time. It was like a lot of our GMs calls where we discuss a lot of things and tell each other what we're trying to do to help our individual teams to improve. And then they brought up the name. They asked if we'd be interested in John Carlson. - Pat Verbeek
This is what Patrick had to say:
I kind of approached it as I'm not really going to actively shop him, but if teams come to me, I'm going to listen. As you're making phone calls around, in the week or two leading up to the deadline and the week of the deadline, if his name came up, I'd kind of say, 'Well, I mean, I'll listen if you're interested in doing something.' And Anaheim was definitely, I think, one of the teams that felt like he would fill a huge need for them, and [Verbeek] was willing to get pretty aggressive right away. - Chris Patrick
Which GM is telling the truth here?
Alex Ovechkin Was Upset By The Trade Of John Carlson
After the trade of his longtime teammate, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin said that it was probably the saddest day of his NHL career.
Now, Capitals fans are likely left wondering whether or not Ovechkin, who is officially a pending UFA at the end of this year, will choose to re-sign with the team or possibly return home to Russia to finish his professional hockey career.
