Calgary continues the Sutter family legacy with recent signing
Last week, long-time AHL veteran Brett Sutter, son of former NHL coach Darryl Sutter, announced his retirement from professional hockey after an impressive 17-season career split between the AHL and NHL.
The 37-year-old served as the captain of the Calgary Wranglers, the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, last season. Sutter recorded eight goals and 10 points in 46 games before deciding to hang up his skates. He'll be transitioning immediately into an assistant coaching role with the Wranglers.

In his official retirement announcement, Sutter expressed mixed emotions about leaving the game.
«Following 17 seasons as a player, I'm very proud and excited to leave the game and have the opportunity to step directly into this role with the Flames organization,» said Sutter. «Saying goodbye to playing isn't easy, the game has treated my family and I so well for so long but the opportunity to stay within the organization that my family loves, makes this transition easier. I'm grateful to the Flames for the opportunity. I'm excited to learn and grow quickly in this new capacity in professional hockey,» continued Sutter. «I'm looking forward to the transition while continuing to provide leadership in a coaching role and ultimately helping our prospects achieve their goal of playing with the Calgary Flames. I'd like to thank everyone who was part of my playing journey, especially my family and so many wonderful teammates and friends.»
A native of Viking, Alberta, Sutter recorded two goals and 10 points in 60 NHL games with the Flames, Carolina Hurricanes, and Minnesota Wild. His longest AHL stint was with the Ontario Reign, where he played from 2015 to 2022.
