The Boston Bruins appear ready to split up their star goaltender tandem, and it may be a team in their own division that pushes hardest to make a deal happen.
After a first-round collapse in the Stanley Cup Playoffs a year ago, the Bruins were looking to bounce back in 2024, and while they didn't make a deep run, they saw enough in their win over the Toronto Maple Leafs to make plans for the future. It was star goaltender Jeremy Swayman that stood up and proved he's the No. 1 in Boston, and even considering his friendship with Linus Ullmark in net, it appears to be just a matter of time until the pair are broken up.
Rumours have swirled dating back to the trade deadline that Boston are open for business on Ullmark, but with the Kings and Devils acquiring goaltenders in Darcy Kuemper and Jacob Markstrom, their list of suitors is dwindling. However, Ottawa Senators reporter Bruce Garrioch now believes the Atlantic Division rivals the Ottawa Senators are in the perfect spot to swoop in and land the veteran star.
"While league sources told Postmedia earlier in the day the Senators had already had stepped up their efforts to acquire goaltender Linus Ullmark from the Boston Bruins, Ottawa may be the last serious team in the mix," he wrote in a piece published earlier today.
Garrioch later wrote: "League sources say the Senators have circled back to the Bruins to see if there's a fit to acquire Ullmark to steady the club's struggling net and those talks have intensified." He also noted that Senators president of hockey operations and general manager Steve Staios "has been making a hard push to try to acquire Ullmark."
Reportedly, Ullmark turned down a deal to the Kings at the trade deadline, so even if the Senators can put together a good enough package, it may not be enough for the Bruins. Only time will tell though, and with the team looking to make a playoff push under a relatively new owner, expect them to be aggressive in pushing for goaltending help, a major need for this team moving forward.
