The Boston Bruins appear ready to make a significant financial commitment to one of their emerging forwards.
According to NHL insider Kevin Weekes, Marat Khusnutdinov is reportedly set to receive a multi-year contract extension worth $4 million annually.
The exact contract length remains unclear, and the Bruins have yet to officially confirm the agreement.
A big change in salary
The reported extension would represent a substantial raise for the 24-year-old Russian forward, who currently carries a $925,000 salary cap hit on a two-year contract that expires following the 2026-27 season.
Khusnutdinov has developed into a valuable contributor since arriving in Boston from the Minnesota Wild in March 2025 as part of the trade involving Justin Brazeau.
During the 2025-26 season, he established career highs with 15 goals and 18 assists for 33 points in 77 games.
Why he's an important player
His versatility, speed, defensive responsibility, and ability to play both center and wing have made him an important option for head coach Marco Sturm.
He also opened the 2026-27 campaign strongly, recording two goals and three assists for five points through Boston's first nine games.
For general manager Don Sweeney, securing Khusnutdinov could represent another step toward building a younger, more competitive forward group.
However, a $4 million annual commitment also raises questions about whether his offensive production will continue improving.
While his versatility brings considerable value, Boston would be investing in his potential rather than an established history of high-end scoring.
If finalized, the extension would demonstrate the Bruins' confidence in Khusnutdinov becoming a long-term piece of their roster.
