Jacob Trouba may face suspension for hard open-ice hit
Former New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba, now with the Anaheim Ducks, could face a suspension from the NHL for his open ice hit against the Philadelphia Flyers in last night's game.
Former New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba has run into trouble several times with the NHL Department of Player Safety for his dangerous hits of opponents, and he could once again be getting a call from them.
During last night's game between the Anaheim Ducks and Philadelphia Flyers, Trouba caught Philadelphia's Denver Barkey with an elbow near center ice, resulting in a penalty.
So far this year, Trouba, who has already been suspended twice in his NHL career for dangerous hits, has 18 points (7G, 11A) in 43 games.
Jacob Trouba Is In His First Full Year With The Anaheim Ducks
Trouba, who was taken with the ninth overall pick by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, would play the first several years of his NHL career in a Jets sweater before being traded in 2019 to the Rangers for Neal Pionk and Winnipeg's first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.
Trouba would play several years in a Rangers sweater, even becoming captain and later winning the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2024 in recognition of his "leadership qualities" and his extensive charitable activities.
But things began to fall apart between Trouba and the Rangers last season, as they reportedly threatened to waive him if he didn't accept a trade; this allegedly did not sit well with many of the Rangers players.
Trouba was then eventually traded to the Ducks for Urho Vaakanainen and a fourth round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.
He has 341 points (81G, 260A) in 868 career NHL games.
