Team Canada's replacement if Devon Toews refuses to go to Olympics revealed
The replacement for Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews, who is soon expecting a fourth child, on the Canadian Roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics has been named if he isn't able to play.
The full roster for Canada in the upcoming 2026 Olympics has been released, but there is one defenseman who may not be able to participate.
Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews and his wife are expecting their fourth child, and he's gone on record by saying that if the baby is not born by the time the Olympics start, that he won't be taking part.

On the reserve roster is New York Islanders rookie defenseman Matthew Schaefer, who was the first overall pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, and he said that he's ready to go if he gets the call.
Team Canada Will Have a Decision To Make If Toews Cannot Play
Canada GM Doug Armstrong said that he respects the mindset of Toews but that because the Olympics will not be delayed, they need to figure out their strategy.
I think out of respect to (Toews) and his family, and also out of respect to Jon Cooper and his group, we're going to have to find out. I certainly respect his wanting to be here for the birth of his child, but this tournament is going on no matter what.

The Olympics, which now have NHL players for the first time in 10 years, will begin on February 6.
