Plans for DeBrusk's Future in Boston

The Boston Bruins are in for quite the interesting season, following the retirements of star centres/club legends Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci.

Now, there's already speculation regarding the future of Jake DeBrusk once again. Having previously requested a trade out of Boston, DeBrusk is still expected to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024 should he fail to agree to an extension with the Bruins.

After tying a career high in goals and putting up a personal best 50-point season, DeBrusk will be looking for a bag next year, and GM Don Sweeney has this to say about his 26-year-old forward:

«Jake deserves a lot of credit. He put all those things [e.g. his trade request] aside and just went out and performed, was on pace for a really, really good year. Had a really good year. Even more so, battled through a couple of different injuries and came back and played well again. I think that's Jake's maturity both as a player, as a person are an important part of our club.»

An Agreement Still Needs to Be Reached

Sweeney also mentioned that he hopes both the Bruins and DeBrusk can come to an agreement on a new contract, as it remains unclear whether DeBrusk will stay in Boston or choose to test the market next summer.

«We'd like to know if Jake indeed does what to be here. Hopefully we can find common ground. We'd like to see Jake remain with the Boston Bruins.»

If both sides want to get a deal done, keeping DeBrusk in Boston will be a big coup for the Bruins organization. The Edmonton native and son of former NHL enforcer/present-day TV analyst Louie DeBrusk has previously stated his interest in staying with the Bruins as recently as August, and would be an important player to keep as the team begins a new era without Bergeron and Krejci.
