Penguins Target Sabres Prospects in Bold Roster Overhaul Move Per Elliotte Friedman
Elliotte Friedman has recently revealed that the Penguins are looking to shake up their roster and go younger, and they're targeting some Sabres prospects.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman suggests a pair of teams that could be trade partners leading up to the deadline: the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres.
Both teams are in rebuild mode, and the Penguins have really fallen off since their hot start to the season. Near dead last in their division, they have won just three of their last 10.
Friedman followed up by mentioning that perhaps the Sabres' youth will intrigue Penguins GM Kyle Dubas since he loves building from within with prospects.
«With all of the noise around the Penguins, I believe they have interest in some of Buffalo's younger, NHL-ready prospects. It fits what they want,» Friedman wrote in his Sportsnet column "32 Thoughts" on Wednesday.
There had been whispers of a «fire sale» coming in Pittsburgh, but Dubas shot down the rumor on the GM Show with Josh Getzoff, indicating there were no plans for a massive roster renovation.
He mentioned wanting to get younger and develop younger talent, but that does not translate to a forthcoming mass movement of the current roster.
«We're trying to bring in younger NHL players, we're trying to bring in prospects, and we're trying to bring in draft picks, with the goal being to quickly develop those assets into people that can help the core group of the team here win one more time and then set the team up for the long-range future,» Dubas said via NHL.com.
«But to say that it's a fire sale, and we're willing to retain money on very long-term deals - you know, I understand how that stuff starts to get out and take on a life of its own, but it's not accurate.»
Initial trade speculation of the fire sale for the Penguins picked up steam on RG Media, based in Montreal and lacking a direct connection with the Pittsburgh media.
