A mock trade sends Tristan Jarry, Beau Akey and two picks to the Rangers for Matt Rempe and Spencer Martin, with Edmonton keeping $1.375 million of Jarry's deal.
Igor Shesterkin is done for the season with a right knee injury, and the Rangers are scrambling in net.
One mock trade from The Mug has a fix, sending Tristan Jarry to New York with Edmonton keeping $1.375 million of his salary.
That drops his cap hit to $4 million for the next two seasons.
The Rangers would also get defenseman Beau Akey, a 2030 third-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick.
The Oilers would get forward Matt Rempe and goalie Spencer Martin in return.
Why the Rangers would like it
New York has leaned on Dylan Garand, who is 4-4-1 with a .900 save percentage, while Joonas Korpisalo sits on injured reserve.
The team also signed veteran James Reimer, and Martin's only action came in relief during a 7-1 loss to the Devils.
Jarry would give them a true starter, and the Rangers host Edmonton on Nov. 1 at Madison Square Garden.
Jarry's contract runs through 2027-28, so the commitment is short.
His first stretch in Edmonton was rough, though, with a 3.86 goals-against average and an .858 save percentage in 19 games after the December trade from Pittsburgh.
He has a 12-team no-trade list, according to reports, which could get in the way.
Where the Oilers say no
Akey is a 21-year-old defenseman who went 56th overall in 2023 and plays for the Bakersfield Condors.
Add two picks and retained salary, and the Oilers are handing over real assets.
In return they get Rempe, a 6-foot-9 forward signed for $975,000 through this season, and Martin, a depth goalie on an expiring deal.
The Oilers would likely pass on this.
Rempe and Martin do not move the needle, and Edmonton would still carry $1.375 million for Jarry.
The Rangers would have a hard time turning this one down.
