Oilers involved in trade talks for star Penguins forward

Every Oilers-Rakell take is arguing about cap space.
That is the wrong argument, and it hides the actual reason this deal is hard to make.
Edmonton has roughly $5.925 million in cap room, per PuckPedia, and Rickard Rakell carries a $5 million hit. On paper the money works, which is why the fit feels obvious.
Stan Bowman already did the hard cap work when he moved Darnell Nurse on the first day of free agency. The space is not the barrier here.
Oilersnation Everyday floated the idea this week, framing it as a real question worth chasing.
The problem sits on the other side of the deal, not on Edmonton's ledger.
Dubas wants the one thing Edmonton no longer has
Kyle Dubas has been clear about his Pittsburgh direction: he wants younger, NHL-ready players, not a pile of picks and distant prospects.
That is precisely the currency Edmonton has spent years emptying. After a decade of win-now trades and the Nurse salary dump, the Oilers' supply of cheap, controllable young talent is close to bare.
So the mismatch is not dollars against dollars. It is Dubas's asking price against a prospect pool Edmonton cannot really pay from.
This would be the last move, not the first
There is a second wrinkle nobody is pricing in. Rakell fills $5 million of that $5.925 million, leaving Edmonton pocket change for call-ups, injuries and any deadline pivot.
Acquiring him does not open Edmonton's summer for more moves. It effectively ends it, freezing their deadline flexibility before the season even starts.
One piece of leverage cuts the other way. Rakell submits an eight-team no-trade list, and a 33-year-old chasing a ring would likely wave for McDavid's team faster than for a longer-horizon fit like Montreal.
That makes Edmonton a genuine destination. It just does not make the return any easier to assemble.
