The New York Rangers did not need a safe offseason. They needed a jolt, and Pavel Dorofeyev gives them exactly that.
Darren Dreger reported Thursday night that Dorofeyev has been traded to the Rangers, a stunning draft-night move that immediately changes the tone of New York's summer. For a team that needed more top-six finishing, this is not a depth addition. It is a real swing.
Chris Drury finally adds a scorer to the Rangers
Dorofeyev is coming off a 37-goal season, which makes this the kind of move Rangers fans have been begging for. New York has had star power, structure, and playoff expectations, but too often, the roster has felt one dangerous winger short.
Now, Drury has gone out and added one before free agency even opens.
There is risk, of course. Dorofeyev's production exploded in Vegas, and the Rangers still have to figure out his next contract. If they overpay based on one monster season, this could get uncomfortable quickly.
But the upside is obvious. Dorofeyev is young, productive, and entering his prime.
The Rangers needed to stop waiting for the perfect move. This was aggressive, unexpected, and exactly the kind of draft-night gamble they had to make.
