The Dylan Larkin saga may be about to take a major turn, and the Montreal Canadiens appear eager to steer it.
According to The Fourth Period:
The Montreal Canadiens have an offer that they are ready to present to Detroit, that they believe will either get them to or over the finish line for Dylan Larkin.
No specifics about the package have surfaced yet, which only adds to the intrigue. What the report does suggest is that Montreal has moved beyond casual interest and believes it has found a number that could get Detroit to say yes.
Why Montreal Believes the Timing Is Right
Detroit has been consistent about what it wants. Reporting from David Pagnotta indicated the Red Wings will not settle for a futures-only return, and Pierre LeBrun shared that they are seeking a more like-for-like deal.
Montreal holds prospects, picks and NHL-ready pieces, which could be why confidence is growing.
The biggest hurdle remains Larkin himself. LeBrun reported that Larkin's list of ten teams did not include Montreal, and any trade requires his approval.
Still, Canadiens fans have made their feelings known, chanting for him at the Bell Centre, and a strong enough offer could force a conversation.
What Detroit Does Next
Detroit is in no rush. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has reportedly considered repairing the relationship with Larkin, which could stretch this saga out, and owner Chris Ilitch publicly said Larkin has his full support for as long as he remains a Red Wing.
None of that changes the math for Montreal. The Canadiens have also been connected to Simon Edvinsson, and Frank Seravalli suggested Montreal and Utah have the assets to land both Edvinsson and Larkin in one move. A bold package could address two Detroit situations at once.
For now, the next move belongs to Montreal. Whether Detroit sees the offer as enough, and whether Larkin is willing to open the door, will decide if this is the start of a deal or just another chapter in a drawn-out standoff. Either way, the Canadiens are making sure Detroit knows they are serious.
