Canadiens and Leafs had agreed to huge blockbuster trade involving Matthew Knies

The Toronto Maple Leafs nearly made a franchise-altering mistake at the trade deadline, and nobody seems bothered by it.
David Pagnotta revealed on the DFO Rundown that the Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens had an agreement in place to send Matthew Knies to Montreal.
The return was Alexander Zharovsky, another prospect, and two first-round picks.
The deal fell apart due to complications before the 3 p.m. ET deadline. Most have focused on whether Kent Hughes will revisit the deal this summer.
That misses the point entirely.
The real story is that Brad Treliving's front office agreed to ship a 22-year-old, 6-foot-3 power forward coming off a 66-point season to a division rival.
That decision tells you everything about where the previous regime's head was at.
Treliving was selling the wrong asset
Knies is exactly the type of player rebuilding teams spend years trying to develop. He plays a physical, net-front game, produces at a top-six level, and is still cost-controlled.
Trading him to Montreal for a package built around a KHL teenager and future picks would have been a desperation move from a GM running out of runway.
Zharovsky won KHL Rookie of the Year, but projecting international prospects into the NHL remains unpredictable.
Two first-round picks sound like a haul until you realize Montreal's selections could land in the middle of the round if they keep improving.
Chayka changes the entire equation
John Chayka replaced Treliving on May 3 and has no obligation to honor a deal negotiated by a fired predecessor.
His stated mandate from ownership is to build a long-term competitive structure around the existing core.
Knies fits that vision perfectly. He is the kind of young, physical winger every contender covets, and the Leafs already have him.
The Canadiens wanted him badly enough to offer a four-piece package. That alone confirms his value, and the smartest move Chayka can make this summer is keeping him in Toronto.
