Blockbuster trade involving David Pastrnak and Canadian team goes viral after online proposal

The cap argument holding it up does not survive the actual numbers.

The proposal sends Matthew Savoie, Isaac Howard, Quinn Hutson and first-round picks in 2028 and 2029 to the Boston Bruins for Pastrnak.

It leans entirely on the idea that the Edmonton Oilers would be the rare contender sitting on roughly $20 million in room.

PuckPedia currently lists Edmonton with about $4.73 million in projected space for 2026-27 against a full 23-man roster. The $20 million figure came from October 2025 projections that Stan Bowman has since spent.

Here is the part that flips the argument. Cap hits are prorated by day, so a player acquired in early March only counts for the sliver of season remaining.

A team accruing $4.73 million in daily space all year banks several times that by the deadline.

Absorbing Pastrnak's $11.25 million hit for the final weeks costs closer to $2.5 million in real terms.

So Edmonton does not need $20 million. Almost no contender does, which is why the only-team-that-can-fit-him framing collapses.

Connor McDavid's extension covers 2026-27 and 2027-28 and expires in the summer of 2028.

The 2028 and 2029 first-round picks in this package are drafted after that.

Those are the two selections Edmonton would lean on if McDavid walks. Mike Babcock's roster is built for now, and those picks are the only insurance for later.

Boston has its own reason to shrug. Don Sweeney's team posted a 100-point season and lost to the Buffalo Sabres in the first round, so the premise that the Bruins become sellers is doing heavy lifting.

One detail does favour Edmonton.

Pastrnak's contract carries no trade protection until year six, which means Boston controls this decision alone until 2028-29.
