Emma Gretzky is engaged to former SMU tight end Stone Eby. The Texas detail is not a coincidence - it traces to a deal made in August 1988.
Emma Gretzky is engaged to Stone Eby, a former SMU tight end. The detail nobody is chasing is the map.
Emma announced the engagement on Instagram last week, and Daily Hive reported the couple met at Southern Methodist University in Dallas back in 2022.
Eby spent five seasons with the Mustangs from 2021 through 2025, went undrafted this spring, and took a rookie minicamp invitation from the Denver Broncos.
Five children, zero NHL careers
None of Wayne and Janet Gretzky's five children became a professional hockey player, and ability was never the deciding factor.
Ty Gretzky spent one season at Shattuck-St. Mary's in Minnesota in 2007 and did not return, later founding the Gretzky Hockey School with his father in 2014.
Trevor Gretzky played the game as a kid, but Yahoo Sports reported that geography steered him elsewhere. He signed with the Chicago Cubs in 2011 and later played in the Los Angeles Angels system.
Tristan Gretzky golfed at Pepperdine. Emma played tennis at SMU, and Paulina married PGA Tour winner Dustin Johnson.
The trade that redrew the family tree
Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings on August 9, 1988, and the standard telling of that deal ends with California rinks and Sun Belt expansion teams.
It also ended with his own children raised in warm-weather America, playing warm-weather sports, and eventually marrying into them.
Emma's son, born last August, is named Walter, after the man who flooded a backyard rink in Brantford, Ontario and taught Wayne to skate on it.
Emma has already posted the boy in skates. His father is a Texas-born tight end.
That is the whole arc inside one family.
The trade that pushed hockey south pulled Walter Gretzky's own grandchildren away from the rink, and the first great-grandchild carrying his name is being laced up by parents who met on a Dallas campus.
