John Klingberg has retired after 700 NHL games and 82 playoff appearances across 12 seasons, closing out a strong offensive career from the blue line.
John Klingberg is calling it a career.
The veteran defenseman announced his retirement from professional hockey on Friday, closing the book on 700 regular season games and 82 postseason appearances over 12 NHL seasons.
Klingberg's decision comes after he went unsigned through the 2026 free agency period.
He spent last season with the San Jose Sharks, appearing in 56 games and posting 10 goals, 17 assists and 27 points for the Pacific Division club.
He also had stops with the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers, and a lone season with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2023-24, one that was cut short by hip surgery.
A career built on offensive instincts
The Gothenburg, Sweden native broke into the league with the Dallas Stars after being drafted in the fifth round back in 2010.
He quickly became known as one of the more dynamic offensive defensemen of his era, quarterbacking power plays and pushing pace from the back end.
His best individual season came in 2017-18, when he racked up 67 points across a full 82-game slate and earned an All-Star nod.
Klingberg's ability to move the puck and create offense from the blue line never really faded, even as injuries slowed him in his later seasons.
The NHLPA marked the occasion with a tribute post, and the league's own account also recognized his run as a steady source of production from the back end throughout his career.
Free agent defense pool gets thinner
With Klingberg officially off the board, the list of available veteran defensemen on the open market has shrunk considerably heading into training camps around the league.
His departure closes out a career that spanned more than a decade and left a mark on every roster he touched.
Fans around the league are already reacting to the news, with plenty of respect being shown for how his career played out from start to finish.
