Dylan Larkin speaks out after the Red Wings announce they will start the season without naming a captain amid his ongoing trade drama.
Dylan Larkin finally broke his silence Thursday, and the timing could not have been more loaded.
Just weeks before training camp opens at Little Caesars Arena, the Red Wings released a statement from their longtime captain addressing the trade request that has hung over the franchise all summer.
Larkin said he has had several candid conversations with Red Wings leadership over the past couple of weeks and that he appreciates where things stand heading into camp.
He confirmed he will report and play alongside his teammates, though he made clear that any real conversation about his future will wait until the club names new hockey operations leadership.
"Over the past couple of weeks, Red Wings leadership and I have had several in-depth discussions. I've appreciated those candid conversations, and I will be at training camp with my teammates. When new leadership is in place, we'll talk further about the direction of the team. We will keep those conversations private, and I will keep my focus on the season ahead and on the guys in that room."

Larkin still wants out, but he's staying quiet
What stood out most was what Larkin did not say.
He never walked back the trade request that shocked Hockeytown back in June, and he stopped short of committing long term to Detroit.
Instead, he framed his focus as staying professional, keeping those private talks private, and locking in on the guys in that locker room for the season ahead.
That is a notably different tone from the frustration that bubbled up from him during Detroit's string of late season collapses.
No captain to start the season
The bigger bombshell came from the Red Wings themselves.
Detroit just confirmed it will open the 2026-27 season without naming a captain, a quiet but unmistakable signal about where Larkin's standing sits right now.
The club also shut down any further public discussion of the trade request, saying that decision belongs to the next GM.

On Dylan Larkin's Trade Request:
"Dylan is under contract as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. Any conversations regarding his future with the Club will take place privately when a new hockey operations leader has been named. As such, we will not comment any further on this matter."

"The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named. Any further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place."
