The NHL's roster freeze is set to be in place ahead of the 2026 Olympic Games, but on Tuesday, three players have been placeed on waivers.
The hype around the 2026 Olympic Games continues to grow, and with the final few days of action before the tournament begins, there was expected to be some movement as a result.
For the most part, fans are hoping for a big time trade to take place before the roster freeze kicks in on Wednesday February 4th, but instead, we've now had three players officially placed on waivers.
Three players waived for the purpose of termination
We've seen some shock waiver moves in recent times, but on Tuesday, it's three players that have struggled to find their place with their respective teams, with Ryan McAllister of the Florida Panthers, Filip Larsson of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Samuel Johannesson of the St. Louis Blues all placed on waivers.
According to top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, all three have been waived for the purpose of contract termination, with none of the three making it past the American Hockey League in 2025/26, despite some solid production from all of them in that league.
None of the three have made it to the National Hockey League yet, and while they've had solid AHL production, there must be something going on behind the scenes for this to have happened.
Now, the attention of fans around the league turn to a potentially massive trade before the roster freeze begins, with the league likely to be shaken up whether that's before or after the 2026 Olympic Games.
