The NHL has sent a charitable donation to the Seattle Pride Hockey Association to help the Seattle Pride Classic get up and running this weekend.

The NHL has made quite a few controversial moves over the past year pertaining to the celebration of the LGBT+ community. Namely, they banned all specialty jerseys, including Pride jerseys, military appreciation jerseys, and Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys. In addition to this, the NHL unsuccessfully tried to ban pride tape from being worn by the players.

However, it looks like they are trying to re-establish themselves as allies having sent a donation to the Seattle Pride Hockey Association in order to help them run the Seattle Pride Classic.

According to the tournament organizers, Seattle Pride Hockey Association, donations from the NHL and NHL Players Association's Industry Growth Fund spurred the launch of the Seattle Pride Hockey League.

The event is set to take place this weekend and will feature notable figures in the hockey community like retired former NHLers JT Brown and Andrew Ferrence, PWHL players Erin Ambrose and Elizabeth Giguere, and the first openly gay player under contract with an NHL team, Predators prospect Luke Prokop.

This is a step in the right direction for the NHL and hopefully next season we will be able to see specialty jerseys on the ice again.
