Connor McDavid suddenly has John Tortorella tied to Edmonton's bench search after Kris Knoblauch's exit.

That is the real turn in Elliotte Friedman's latest read.
Bruce Cassidy still feels like the cleaner hockey fit, but Tortorella's name entering the conversation changes the pressure map.
Edmonton is not shopping for a soft voice. This is a win-now roster looking for a coach who can tighten the bench fast.
Friedman's clip lands because Tortorella is not a background name. He is currently the Vegas Golden Knights head coach, hired March 29, 2026.
Friedman moves straight from Tortorella to Cassidy, which tells the story: Edmonton is looking at edge, accountability, and a harder room.
Friedman leans into the coaching fit, not just tossing out a rumor for noise.
Re Oilers coaching search: "I was thinking, if Vegas doesn't keep John Tortorella, he might be a guy that fills kinda what they want, but to me it just screams Bruce Cassidy."

- Elliotte Friedman

Tortorella changes the Oilers' leverage

Tortorella would bring a very different temperature to Edmonton than Cassidy.
Cassidy is the polished contender play. Tortorella is the stress test.
For McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, that would mean a coach who won't tiptoe around habits, shifts, or bench standards.
The risk is obvious. Tortorella can sharpen a group, but his style also demands total buy-in from the locker room.
That is why Friedman's mention is not small. It gives Edmonton a second hard-edged lane if Cassidy stays out of reach.
As of today, Cassidy may still be the name that fits best, but Tortorella is suddenly the one that makes the search feel less predictable.
