This evening, a new report has surfaced from NHL insider Pierre LeBrun providing an update on Alex Ovechkin's future as retirement rumors continue to spread.
At the end of the 2025-26 season, Alex Ovechkin was serenaded by Capitals fans during the team's last home game as reports of his potential retirement surfaced.
After the game, Ovechkin spoke to the media and did not confirm or deny his plans for next season leaving the decision open for the offseason.
Now, with the draft and free agency about to kick off in the coming weeks, insider Pierre LeBrun gave the latest details on Ovechkin's timeline for a decision.
Pierre LeBrun provides an update on Alex Ovechkin's future amidst retirement rumors
In a recent segment, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported that Alex Ovechkin is likely to make his decision on retirement in within the next month.
I would venture to guess we'll get a decision from Alex Ovechkin on his future sometime in July.
Ovechkin, 40, is one of the greatest to ever do it breaking the all-time goals record and winning a Stanley Cup.
Having accomplished everything a player could dream of the question remains what is left driving Ovechkin back to the NHL?
If Ovechkin cannot find the motivation to get geared up for another season then we likely will hear a retirement announcement in the coming weeks.
Deciding on his future in July would give the Capitals enough time to shift their offseason plans if Ovechkin does decide to retire and thus frees up his salary cap space.
In that case, the Capitals would need to figure out whether they still plan to contend or if that would be their sign to rebuild.
As the offseason gets underway, we will continue to provide the latest details on Alex Ovechkin's future in the NHL and beyond.
