John Chayka addressed Matthew Knies trade rumors on Friday, and most of the coverage landed on three words: "not probable."
That statement is worth reading more carefully, because the actual news is buried a little deeper.
The Toronto Maple Leafs' previous general manager had already agreed to send Knies to the Montreal Canadiens at the March trade deadline.
That deal - two first-round picks and a prospect - was submitted one minute after the deadline closed.
Per Elliotte Friedman, that offer is gone and no longer on the table.
Chayka is not dealing with a situation. He inherited a price, and on Friday he told the entire league that price needs to go higher.
"The idea we're going to improve the roster by moving a top young player. Anything's possible, I guess it's not probable. I think it makes for good writing, good interest for people, but that's a tough bar to hurdle."

Not probable is not an endorsement of Knies. It is a message to every team that thinks the old package still qualifies.
What the previous deal reveals about Knies' actual value
Knies is 23 years old, carries a $7.75 million cap hit through 2030-31, and posted 66 points in 79 games last season.
The prior regime was willing to ship him out for two firsts and a prospect. Chayka is telling the market that deal was not good enough.
That resets the negotiation floor for every team currently still interested, including Montreal.
Why this matters more than it looks right now
Chayka landed Darren Raddysh on an eight-year deal this week and has already remade the blue line.
Jim Hiller was named the 41st head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs on June 17, just three days ago.
With Gavin McKenna arriving at the June 26 draft, the core of this team is quietly being assembled around Knies, not away from him.
That is the honest read on Friday's comment. Chayka is not protecting his player - he is protecting his leverage.
