Last night, Team Canada fell in the semi-finals of the Copa America tournament, and it's safe to say that hockey fans weren't fans of the theatrics.
While nothing brings Canada together like hockey, it was soccer that was in the spotlight during the week when Canada took on Argentina in the semi-final of the famed Copa America tournament. Unfortunately for Team Canada, they fell 2-0 to the heavily favored Argentina, but it didn't come without drama and plenty of controversy.
Now, iconic hockey announcer Gord Miller has taken to social media to call out Argentina and the display of flopping and theatrics that they brought to the highly anticipated game.
There should be mechanism to review plays like this and hand out post-match suspensions for clear cut instances of diving and embellishment. I love soccer, but this is embarrassing to the sport.
For many in Canada, this may have been one of their first times watching the sport at this level, and it's safe to say that if that's the case, it wouldn't have been a very enjoyable experience.
This was just one instance of theatrics from Argentina that frustrated the Canadian team, who also didn't bury any of their chances, falling 2-0 in what was a thrilling run for the team. Fans have now taken their suggestions to social media on how to improve such occurrences;
FIFA should really implement what MLS has done when a player is "injured". If they remain on the ground for more than 15 seconds they have to exit the field following treatment and stay off for a minimum of 2 minutes until the next stoppage in play. It's made a noticeable difference in MLS matches.
Ultimately, there's no quick fix for this type of performance, as we've been seeing it for years, but it was just unfortunate that when all of Canada was watching, this was the type of event they saw.
