Jake McCabe gave Craig Berube the real answer: Toronto's $4,513,102 defender jumped into the Radko Gudas pile because the Leafs couldn't look passive again.

That's the story, not the theatre. McCabe turned a fan grievance into a roster-level response.
Berube had already made his view clear after Auston Matthews was hurt on March 12. He wanted a faster answer than Toronto gave that night.
So when McCabe went after Gudas in the second-period scrum, it landed as a bench correction. He took a roughing minor and a game misconduct as the aggressor.
That matters because McCabe isn't fringe muscle. He's a regular blue-line piece signed through 2029-30, which makes this look like identity, not staged noise.
Gudas had already been suspended 5 games for kneeing Matthews, and Matthews' Grade 3 MCL tear ended his season. Toronto carried that scar into Anaheim.
The Leafs also came in before the game with a 31-30-13 record, so this wasn't some top seed flexing. This was a flawed team trying to prove it still has a pulse.

Why McCabe changed the read on Toronto

Max Domi starting the night with Gudas was expected. McCabe joining later is what gave the response weight across the room.
Berube doesn't just need emotion. He needs credible players on his blue line showing the group what accountability looks like.
Anaheim dressed Gudas anyway, even with Joel Quenneville's club chasing points at 41-28-4 before the game. That invited the whole storm.
Once Gudas served his penalties, Toronto had already made its point. The 5-4 overtime win was almost secondary.
McCabe didn't just get his licks in. He backed Berube's standard, and that travels into every Leafs game from here.
