Connor Hellebuyck is one of the best goalies in the league, and as he enters the final year of his contract, trade talks are picking up.
Reports are indicating he has chosen his ideal location, and things are shaping up to become a dynasty on the East Coast.
Hellebuyck Wants to Be a Devil
The New Jersey Devils are entering a very exciting era. They have their forward core locked up long-term, all at incredible market value, Jack Hughes is emerging as a top-10 player in the league, and Dougie Hamilton could win a Norris if he keeps up his current pace.
The one thing the team doesn't have is goaltending. While Akria Schmid put the team on his back through two rounds this season, he is far from an elite starter. Bringing in Hellebuyck would cement them as contenders for the next several years.
Per Pierre LeBrun, the Devils are an ideal location for Hellebuyck, and they have the cap flexibility to meet his contract demands of ~8x$9.5M.
It's a steep price to pay, but almost all deep playoff runs either have fluke-good goaltending, or an elite netminder between the pipes.
Connor Hellebuyck is willing to re-sign long-term with the New Jersey Devils, if he is traded there. Per, Pierre LeBrun.
Hellebuyck is asking for a long-term deal in the $9.5M AAV range.
The Devils have a deep prospect cupboard, and could very feasibly acquire Hellebuyck from the Jets. The only question at this point seems to be when a deal will happen!
