Referee's Miss Blatant Call That Would Have Yielded A Penalty Shot
The NHL has its first major controversial officiating moment of the season. One decision by the referees might have changed the entire outcome of a game.
Referee's Miss A Blatant Call
Near the end of the second period the Seattle Kraken and Detroit Red Wings were locked in a tight contest. The Kraken were up 2-1 when one play changed the narrative of the game.
The Kraken were in the defensive zone fending off a Red Wings attack. A desperate diving defender threw his stick to block a pass. This is supposed to be a penalty but was not called one. The Kraken would go on to get the puck back and score on the ensuing rush.
Referee calls Chiarot for a helmet violation but doesn't call a Kraken thrown stick (that interfered with a pass, preventing an open one-timer) - then Seattle went down the ice and scored.
Absolutely brutal officiating. #LGRW
Red Wings players and staff were obviously upset in the moment. The goal would go on to be even more impactful than anyone thought at the time.
Kraken Win Due To Missed Call
After going into the third period up 3-1 the Kraken would blow their lead and the game would go to overtime. Eventually, the Kraken won on an overtime goal from
Jordan Eberle. With the game ending with a one-goal difference the missed call completely changed the outcome.
The Kraken got their second win of the season after struggling out of the gate. On the flip side, the Red Wings fall to 5-1-1 after an electric start to the year. Both teams will look to get back on track after a wild game.
