The big buzz over the weekend was the blockbuster trade between the Calgary Flames and Florida Panthers, which included the big names of Matthew Tkachuk, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mackenzie Weegar.

The interesting part about this trade is the Flames acquired two high end players who are both on the final year of deals that bring them straight into free agency as UFA's.
Huberdeau is 29 and Weegar is 28, they are not considered young in the league anymore and will definitely want to play on a Stanley Cup contending team. Last season the Flames were considered one of the favourites to come out of the west, but that was before they exchanged two 100 point scorers for one 100 point scorer. Even if you balance out Huberdeau and Tkachuk, the Flames definitely got worse this offseason with the loss of Johnny Gaudreau.
Would two players who are now considered veterans commit long term to a team that may not be considered a contender anymore?
This morning the two newly acquired Flames spoke with the media, and NHL Insider Eric Francis, said there was some good news for Flames fans on these two newly acquired members.
Jonathan Huberdeau:
«I'm open to signing in Calgary long term."
MacKenzie Weegar:
«Same here.»

Weegar on the boxes you check before signing long term:
«Are we a winning team? How is the city? How are the teammates? How are the coaches. Those are some of the boxes you check to sign with a team. I've heard good things about all those things in Calgary.»

Canadian-born Huberdeau and Weegar spoke of how excited they are to play in Canada for the first time - something neither ever expected to experience.
