The home town Maple Leafs had a dominant victory over the Montreal Canadiens last night, finishing with a score of 7-1. Prior to the game, the Maple Leafs were without a backup goaltender due to cap space limitations, but they signed Jett Alexander as an emergency backup for the night.
As the Maple Leafs were comfortably leading, they decided to fulfill Alexander's dream of playing in a National Hockey League game and put him in with only 1:10 left on the clock.
Although this gesture is typically considered to be a sportsmanlike move, one of the Montreal Canadiens players, Chris Wideman, did not view it that way.
After the game, Wideman, a defenceman for the Habs, expressed his disapproval of the Maple Leafs' decision to put in the backup goalie during a blowout game, stating the following to the press.
They'll get what they deserve in a few weeks.
