Patrik Laine is a former 2nd overall pick back in 2016 by the Winnipeg Jets. In his rookie season he scored 36 goals 64 points in 73 games and followed that up the next season with 44 goals and 70 points in 82 games.
Laine was though to be the next Ovechkin as he has a wicked shot, and plays in the same position on the powerplay. Unfortunately though, Laine has not lived up to his 44 goal season ever since.
In 2020 he was traded from the Jets to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Pierre Luc Dubois. He had a bit of a rocky start with the Jackets and did not see eye-to-eye with then coach John Tortorella, which not many players do.
But last season under a new coach, Laine scored 26 goals 56 points in 56 games.
Now with the new huge addition the Jackets just made of Johnny Gaudreau, look for Laine to get back to that 40+ goal pace next season and get back to the days of challenging
Auston Matthews for who was the better draft pick in 2016.
Laine is officially staying with the Blue Jackets for 4 more season after signing a great deal today!
The Blue Jackets have signed restricted free agent forward Patrik Laine to a four-year, $34.8 million contract extension ($8.7 million AAV) through the 2025-26 NHL season
