The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) is the premier league for junior hockey in Quebec. Today they made a major announcement regarding one of their big awards. According to multiple sources, the award for best goaltender will now be named after former QMJHL legend player and coach Patrick Roy.
This honor is huge for Roy who has spent a significant amount of his life dedicated to the QMJHL. Now the best goaltender will be honored with an award in his namesake. This award is essentially the QMJHL's version of the Vezina Trophy.
While he is done coaching, managing, and of course playing for the moment he is still the owner of the Quebec Remparts who are in the QMJHL.
He only recently stepped away from coaching and being the general manager after winning both the QMJHL's Gilles-Courteau Trophy and the Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup in those roles in 2023. Roy will now look to be the only owner in the major junior leagues to have a player win an award named after them while actively owning the team.
The ultimate goal of course is more QMJHL and Memorial Cup championships as well. If Roy continues to have a massive impact on junior hockey in Canada he could have more honors and awards named after him in the future.
