We are over 2 weeks into free agency and each year we see some General Managers get overexcited with some of the names available and make some big mistakes signing these players to long expensive contracts that end up being a big mistake quick. While sometimes these deals look great immediately, but within a quick few years sometimes we see quite a bit of regret.
We also see something similar with players, they believe they're worth more than what teams value them at and they wait too long to sign a deal and end up having to take one year contracts just to find a team to work with.
This past week we saw this exact thing happen to former Dallas Stars defenceman John Klingberg. After getting sick of being a free agent, Klingberg fired his former agent in hopes that new representation could find him a deal. Klingberg was forced to sign a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks valued at $7,000,000.
We are also seeing something similar happen with the 2nd best player that was available in free agency, Nazem Kadri. Many believed Kadri would be off the board quick in free agency, and the recent stanley cup winning center is currently without a job.
Sportsnet's Hockey Central's John Shannon took a little shot at Kadri who wants to get a raise on the undervalued contract he has been playing on for years now, which carried a cap hit of $4,500,000. Shannon believes both players ''overpriced'' themselves.
