Yesterday NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun shared on TSN's Insider Trading that one of Montreal's defensemen is drawing interest from a surprising new team. The defenseman in question is none other than Jeff Petry. Petry, who turns 35-years old next season, is drawing a lot of interest and he has 3 seasons remaining on his current contract with a cap hit of $6,500,000
According to LeBrun the Dallas Stars are the latest team to enter into the Jeff Petry sweepstakes. The Dallas Stars are currently dealing with their own situation with John Klingberg who has requested a trade, but according to LeBrun the Stars might be looking to fill their Klingberg hole with Petry.
«One league source suggested a scenario to me today that the Stars could emerge as a team with interest, the idea being that if the Stars move Klingberg, who as we know has asked for a trade, they can turn around and replace him with Petry.»
LeBrun continued that the Canadiens are telling teams that, «they don't need to move Petry and that they don't intend on moving Petry at a discount just due to his struggles."
This creates an interesting dynamic as there have been multiple reports that Petry would like a fresh start, but it appears new General Manager Kent Hughes knows all the right buttons to press.
