Johnny Gaudreau informed the #Flames he will not be returning to Calgary. Emotional conversation for both sides, as the Flames rolled out the red carpet to keep him.
A massive offer was presented, as we reported, but this wasn't about money.— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 13, 2022
Despite the Calgary Flames offering him a contract valued at over 10 million per season for 8 years.
My sense is #Flames have put an offer on the table for Johnny Gaudreau - north of $10 mil x 8 years - that would make him not only highest-paid player in Calgary franchise history, but among richest in #NHL.
If Gaudreau walks, it likely won't be because of money. Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) July 12, 2022
NHL insider Nick Kypreos belives Gaudreau's situation is going to be like what happened with John Tavares and the New York Islanders. Tavares who was the captain of the New York Islanders chose to leave in free agency to join his favourite childhood team the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to Kypreos, he thinks Gaudreau will be joining the Philadelphia Flyers as soon as Free Agency opens tomorrow, but he also believes 2 other teams are heavily in the mix.
Gaudreau is from New Jersey and the Devils are looking for an elite scoring winger to bring their team to the next level, which is exactly what Gaudreau provides. He also believes the New York Islanders are heavy favourites as well, as it was reported earlier that the Islanders are set to offer him a 9 mil contract over a 7 year deal.
At the time of writing, we are just over 15 hours away from free agency and it's going to an interesting few hours. With Gaudreau announcing he will test the free agency, I wonder if one of these three teams will trade for his rights from the Flames in order to get him locked up before the Free Agent frenzy begins.
