Encouraging Update For The Capitals And Nicklas Backstrom
The Washington Capitals have relied on an ageing core for a number of years now, but from this latest update, we may see a team that's still got plenty of fight left in them.
A veteran center ready to bounce back
According to updates from within the Capitals,
Nicklas Backstrom, who was thought to be ageing his way out of the NHL has looked great in recent times, and could potentially be showing signs of the star we once knew.
I thought Nicklas Backstrom was done. Best case scenario: a third or fourth line center you'd have to protect at 5v5 and he'd get points on the power play.
He, to me right now, legitimately looks like a first-line center again.
That's a huge piece of the puzzle.
Still gas left in the tank
At 35-years of age, Nicklas Backstrom hasn't topped 70 points since the 2018-19 season, leading to many writing off the veteran center, but it's not time to give up on him yet.
He also hasn't played in 80 or more gams since 2018, and if he can be consistently on the ice once again, he should be featured heavily in the Capitals top-six, and if that's the case, this team could be as dangerous as any in the Eastern Conference.
