The Calgary Flames started the season on an absolute tear. As of January 1st the Calgary Flames sat 3rd in the Pacific Division with 38 points, the Flames had 5 games in hand and sat only 6 points back of the 1st place Vegas Golden Knights. Jump ahead a month and a half, now the Flames sit in the last Wild Card spot with 4 teams within 4 points of them.
Andrew Mangiapane was an absolute star for the Flames to start the season, he put up 17 points in 19 games to begin the season, but his hot streak has come to a crawl since then. Mangiapane has 10 points in his last 23 games since his incredible start and along with Mangiapane the Flames secondary scoring has dried up as of late. The Flames struggles seem to align closely with the teams' battle with COVID-19 over the holiday season.
According to Pierre LeBrun the Flames are now in search of some secondary scoring help and he expects General Manager Brad Treliving to turn to some natural trade partners, in both the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators.
With both Ottawa and Montreal outside of the playoff race there are some natural trade targets in players such as Josh Anderson, Tyler Toffoli, Nicholas Paul and possibly Connor Brown depending on the route the Senators choose to go.
