Chris Johnston reported some major news in the last few minutes concerning the Calgary Flames.
Flames and Backlund Closing In on Contract Extension?
Mickael Backlund still has a year left on his contract, but all summer long, rumours of an extension getting inked before the start of the season have been circulating.
"It sounds like the Calgary Flames are getting close to finalizing a contract extension with veteran Mikael Backlund. The sides are believed to be hammering out some final issues."
"Once finalized, expect Mikael Backlund's two-year extension with the #Flames to carry an AAV in the neighbourhood of $4.5M."
The Flames wanted to get this done sooner than later, as there's a lot of chance we see Backlund being named captain of the team.
There's been no captain in Calgary since Mark Giordano left in 2021 and Backlund is the obvious candidate for the job.
Once the deal is officially announced, don't be surprised if another once follows, announcing his captaincy.
