BREAKING: Two players put on WAIVERS for contract TERMINATION
This year has been exciting for the waiver wire, and today didn't disappoint. The flat cap during COVID has affected quite a few teams and they've been looking for ways to free up cap space. A lot of teams have reached their contracts limit as well and have been terminating contacts to free up a slot.
Today it was announced that five players have been put on waivers, and two of them are for contract termination.
Craig Smith who is a former 50 point scorer has been put on waivers from the Boston Bruins.
The Detroit Red Wings have put 30 year old Austin Czarnik on waivers and the Edmonton Oilers signed veteran Jason Demers, who must clear waivers first to be able to join the team.
Ontop of these players, we see two players get put on waivers for the purpose of contract termination.
First we have a former Toronto Maple Leaf who returned to the NHL this year, after a few seasons in the KHL, who just didn't quite fit in with the New York Islanders, so they put him on waivers for contract termination, that player being Nikita Soshnikov.
The Colorado Avalanche also put prospect Danila Zhuravlyov, who after 14 games in the AHL this season, only recorded 1 assist.
Gold Star did not represent Zhuravlyov when signing his contract with Colorado, which unfortunately did not fully address the player's interests. In particular, the contract lacked a clause about the player's possible departure for Russia, which previously prevented the player from returning to the KHL.
Lukas Sedlak has cleared. His contract will be terminated.
