This week we have seen the IIHF ban the Russians and Belarusians from participating in any international hockey and on Tuesday CCM announced they would be dropping Ovechkin and all players from Russia from its marketing going forward.
Now it gets worse, on Tuesday we heard Daniel Milstein, who represents a large amount of the Russian players in the NHL make an announcement that his Russian players and their families are being threatened.
Then this morning we have learned from TSN's Rick Westhead stated that:
Have connected about Russia's war in Ukraine with a number of NHL player agents who have Russian clients.
Advice they all are giving players is to be careful.
Russian parliament considering new law that could mean up to 15 yrs in prison for spreading «fake news» about the war. Rick Westhead (@rwesthead) March 2, 2022
While this is a difficult time, this is not being done at the hands of Russian hockey players. We should not be taking out frustrations on those who are here to play hockey. They do not control the government, nor even have a say with what happens.
We have learned that people in Russia who are protesting the war are being taken to jail. So with many of the Russians playing hockey in North America having family back home in Russia, do you think it's smart of them to take an anti-Putin stance? We have heard multiple Russians now take a stance and say no war, they are against the war.
This is most likely the absolute best they can do to keep their families safe.
