MacKinnon has been deemed out with an upper-body injury by the Avalanche after a fight with Minnesota Wild's Matt Dumba on the weekend.
He is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 22 goals, 48 assists in 51 games this season.
The star forward will not play tonight in Calgary and has returned to Denver for further evaluation per the head coach.
Nathan MacKinnon out for tonight and foreseeable future adds yet another layer of intriguing storylines for tonight's Flames/Avs game in which Sean Monahan will draw back in.
