Salary arbitration is a very scary thing for cap-strapped teams. For the Leafs and Ilya Samsonov, things aren't looking too hot.
$2.5-Million Difference
The process of salary arbitration is where the player and team both put in a claim of what they think a fair salary would be.
The Maple Leafs put in a bid of $2.4-million for Samsonov. Samsonov's camp? $4.9-million.
Comparables
Their comparable is likely Adin Hill, who just signed a 2x4.9M deal in Vegas, but Hill backstopped a Stanley Cup win.
The Maple Leafs are clearly low, as Samsonov is their starter, but it is impossible that Samsonov genuinely thinks he's worth nearly $5-million.
They will likely meet somewhere in the middle, and the Leafs will be able to hold on to their starter for a little longer.
