Today was a big day for waivers in the NHL as teams begin to set their final rosters. The Pittsburgh Penguins had a surprise player head to the waiver wire when moves were announced.
Former First-Round Pick Placed On Waivers
Multiple sources have confirmed that the Pittsburgh Penguins have placed Ty Smith on waivers.
Pittsburgh has Ty Smith on waivers today.
Smith has struggled to find a place in the NHL after being drafted by the New Jersey Devils 17th overall in the 2018 NHL Draft. He has looked good in small sample sizes at times but struggled to get a big opportunity.
Many thought with new General Manager Kyle Dubas coming in that Smith might finally get some significant playing time. This appears not to be the case though as he goes on waivers.
The now 23-year-old defenseman will potentially be playing for his third team in 3 years. He was acquired from the New Jersey Devils in what now looks like a horrendous trade by former General Manager Ron Hextall. Smith was acquired for John Marino who was a fantastic top-four defenseman for the New Jersey Devils who made the playoffs last season.
Hopefully, Smith gets an opportunity to show what he can do at the NHL level and get his career back on track.
