21 players expected to hit free agency on Saturday with a Pittsburgh Penguin leading the way

The list of pending unrestricted free agents around the league is set to jump by 21 players once the calendar flips to August 15, and most casual fans have probably never heard of a single one of them.

That's because this batch isn't coming from buyouts or expiring NHL contracts.

It's coming from college hockey.

Under NHL rules, players who finish their fourth season of NCAA eligibility as undergraduates are allowed to notify the league's Central Registry that they're no longer full time students.

Once that paperwork goes in, they're wiped off their draft team's reserve list and become free agents who can sign anywhere.

A handful of names have already quietly signed AHL deals for next season, which doesn't stop them from also pursuing an NHL contract elsewhere since those minor league deals don't count as binding NHL paperwork.
