2019 Top-10 Pick Reportedly On The Trade Block
The Edmonton Oilers are looking to shop one of their recent top 10 picks after a lackluster development curve.
Broberg On The Block
Back in 2019, the Edmonton Oilers took a swing on left-shot defenseman Philip Broberg. Broberg was picked with the anticipation that he would eventually become the partner for 2018 top 10 pick Evan Bouchard. While Bouchard has developed into a fantastic NHLer, Broberg has yet to do so.
Only playing 69 career NHL games, Broberg is currently looking like the Oilers 7th defenseman behind Darnell Nurse, Mattias Ekholm, and Brett Kulak on the left side.
With this, there has been speculation on whether the Oilers will be moving Broberg in their quest for the 2024 Stanley Cup.
Allan Mitchell of The Athletic reports:
"Broberg's size, speed and wingspan give him a terrific advantage over defencemen who lack those skills. A team less focused on the season ahead and more focused on the future would find Broberg an attractive candidate for a trade."
Is Broberg As Good As Gone?
Many teams who are trading a piece that could help the Oilers are in a position where they could afford to wait on Broberg. Edmonton also has their first-round picks in the next three drafts so it could help them if they decided to move a pick alongside Broberg.
It seems like Broberg will be sitting behind a lot of players next year so barring any long-term injury early on to a player ahead of him, it seems like Broberg will be shipped out in a major deal.
