Brady Tkachuk flattened Macklin Celebrini from behind in the Sharks' opener, and Jacob Trouba answered right away. San Jose won 4-3 in overtime.
Brady Tkachuk made a loud impression against the Sharks on Thursday night.
Early in the opening period at SAP Center, the Florida Panthers forward chased down Macklin Celebrini and put him on the ice from behind along the boards.
Officials did not call a penalty on the hit itself.
Trouba answers the bell
Jacob Trouba, the veteran defenseman San Jose added over the summer, did not wait around.
He went straight after Tkachuk, and the two dropped the gloves at 7:40 of the first period.
Both players received five-minute fighting majors, and that was the only discipline from the whole sequence.
Plenty of fans online wondered why the original hit went unpunished.
The timing made it even more charged.
Celebrini was playing his first game since being named the 11th captain in Sharks history, and the 20-year-old had already bumped Florida captain Aleksander Barkov off his feet near center ice moments earlier.
Tkachuk, who landed in Florida this summer in a trade with Ottawa, is playing his first season alongside brother Matthew.
San Jose wins it in overtime
The fight was only the start of a wild night.
The Sharks built a 3-0 lead on goals from Mason Marchment and a pair from Will Smith, one of them short-handed after Celebrini forced a turnover.
Barkov left the game in the second period with a lower-body injury and did not return, and Florida stormed back in the third.
Eetu Luostarinen scored twice and Matthew Tkachuk added one to tie it 3-3.
Luca Cagnoni ended it 3:14 into overtime for his first career NHL goal, set up by Smith and Celebrini, and San Jose escaped with a 4-3 win.
Celebrini finished with three assists.
Florida now sits 1-0-1 on a four-game road trip to open the season.
Expect this matchup to stay heated.
