The Toronto Maple Leafs are drawing criticism from the West Coast, and it all centres on their prized rookie.
Vancouver radio host Matthew Sekeres took aim at Gavin McKenna and the Maple Leafs franchise after the club decided not to make the first overall pick available to local media during their stop in Vancouver.
Sekeres did not soften his message, saying the team was “too scared of the big, bad Vancouver media.”
Why Vancouver Made Sense for McKenna
Sekeres built a straightforward case. McKenna is a Whitehorse native, which makes Vancouver the NHL market closest to his hometown.
The forward also trains in the city during the offseason, so the area is familiar ground for him. On top of that, he arrived coming off a two-goal, three-point game, handing the Leafs a perfect chance to promote a rising star to a passionate fan base.
There is also history here. The Canucks had the highest odds of any team to win the draft lottery, but the Maple Leafs won it instead.
Vancouver was once viewed as a possible landing spot for McKenna, which adds a layer of intrigue to the local interest.
A Familiar Spotlight for the Leafs
Teams control player availability, and the Leafs are within their rights to limit access. Still, the optics of keeping a number one pick away from reporters in his home region invite questions, and Sekeres framed it as fear rather than strategy.
McKenna has already handled the intense Toronto spotlight as a rookie, including the questions that followed his first benching under Jim Hiller. Another media session, even in a rival market, would likely have been routine for the young winger.
For the Leafs, the story is a minor distraction on a road trip, but it speaks to a larger reality. McKenna is the face of the franchise's future, and every decision about how he is presented to the public will draw attention, from fans and from critics alike.
Whether the Leafs address Sekeres' criticism or let it fade remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Vancouver noticed, and the debate over McKenna's availability will not fade quickly.
