The Canucks may finally be ready to close the book on the Elias Pettersson era, and insiders believe the front office wants it done before next season even starts.

According to Thomas Drance of The Athletic Hockey Show, Vancouver's preference is clear.
If the front office can find a workable path to trade Pettersson this summer, they will take it.
That comment lines up with months of speculation about where the 27 year old center fits in a franchise that finished dead last a season ago and has been stockpiling assets ever since.
"I think if the Canucks could figure out a solution to the Elias Pettersson problem and move him on this summer, that would be their preference."

Why the timeline matters now

Ryan Johnson and his staff have been rebuilding around youth and draft capital, and Pettersson's massive contract does not exactly fit that timeline.
He is owed through the 2031-2032 season at a cap hit north of $11 million dollars, a number that has scared off several suitors already floated in trade chatter, including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Rival executives have reportedly questioned whether Pettersson can rediscover the scoring touch that once made him one of the league's most feared centers.
That uncertainty is exactly why Vancouver may be willing to accept a modest return just to move his money and start fresh.

What a realistic deal looks like

Drance has pointed to the Darnell Nurse trade as a rough comparable, a deal that cleared salary and brought back a young defenseman rather than a blockbuster haul.
For a Canucks team focused on the long game, clearing the deck might matter more than maximizing the return.
Whether that means a summer resolution or a deal that drags into the season remains to be seen, but the direction from Vancouver's side sounds increasingly settled.
