Adam Fantilli's contract standoff may have just opened an unexpected door to offer sheet from rival

It felt like a settled question just a few weeks ago.

Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff reported in July that the Philadelphia Flyers were finished making aggressive offseason moves, having already fired off a blockbuster offer sheet to Leo Carlsson.

Adam Fantilli was specifically ruled out, along with fellow Blue Jackets names Zach Werenski and Simon Edvinsson.

The reasoning was straightforward: Fantilli's production wasn't seen as being on Carlsson's level, GM Danny Briere didn't want to burn bridges around the league by targeting multiple players in one summer, and Briere's son works as a video coach in Columbus.

That was then. Per William James of Philly Hockey Now, the Flyers should seriously reconsider going back down the offer sheet road with Fantilli, and the shift traces directly back to how his own negotiations with Columbus are going.

Elliotte Friedman reported that Fantilli and the Blue Jackets remain far apart, with the young center possibly seeking money in line with what fellow 2023 draft classmates Leo Carlsson ($18 million AAV) and Connor Bedard ($15 million AAV) landed.

Friedman pegged Columbus as sitting closer to the $12 million to $12.5 million range, a gap that isn't closing quickly.

The Flyers still have the cap flexibility to make it happen, which is exactly why this speculation refuses to die.

Fantilli's size, physicality and offensive tools fit the mold of what Philadelphia has chased in recent additions, even with his faceoff numbers and defensive game still rounding into form.

The compensation cost would be steep, likely multiple first round picks if Columbus declined to match, and the relationship risk Di Marco flagged in July hasn't disappeared either.

With training camp roughly a month away and Fantilli still unsigned, this is a storyline worth watching closely.
